Volunteers of all ages are needed throughout the Charlie’s Place program, primarily during our meal service, every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 6 – 9am and now on Saturdays from 7-10am.

When you volunteer for the breakfast program, you may help prepare and serve food, distribute clothing and toiletries and have the opportunity to interact with clients, often on a one on one basis. We work very hard to create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and our clients are very interested in meeting and interacting with you and our other volunteers from around the country. If you’re interested in volunteering please click HERE.

Other volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year. We are always looking for people to help organize community members and friends for wine and cheese parties.  These parties help facilitate conversations about how we can help end homelessness. If you’re interested hosting an event please contact Barbara Wille, our Director of Development.

If you’ve visited us already, please leave a short review of your experience in the comments below. We’re looking forward to having you back to work with us.

  1. Hello,

I was wondering if you had any evening or nighttime volunteering opportunities.

    1. Morning, Matt,

We are a breakfast program, Tuesdays through Saturdays, so our program is closed in the evenings. One thing we do in the evenings is have wine and cheese events to spread the word about Charlie’s Place and to raise money. If you would be interested in hosting such an event for your neighbors and friends, we’d love to talk to you about that! Best, Barbara

  2. During our mission trip to Washington DC in July, our youth group had the privilege of serving breakfast at Charlie’s Place as well as handing out bagged lunches in DuPont Circle. During the time we were at St. Margaret’s, Some of our youth were asked to fulfill clothing requests for the clients. I was wondering if there was a need for new t-shirts that had been previously been ordered for our mission trip but not used.

    1. That would be wonderful, Marsha! We always need t-shirts for our clients, what do you need from us to make this happen? Warm best wishes, Barbara

      1. I will box up the shirts to send your way. I will send it to Charlie’s Place in care of St. Margaret’s. Your program is so special. Glad to help even in this very small way. Would u be able to prioritize , maybe the top 3, needs of your program?

        1. Hi Marsha, thank you so very much for your kind gift of t-shirts! You ask what are our 3 highest priorities — The first, and always, is financial gifts to underwrite all we do. Today is Giving Tuesday and if you and others are able, it would be wonderful if you could give on-line at http://www.charliesplacedc.org! Other high priorities are just what you sent, basic clothing, and also metro tokens, to help our clients get to Dr. appointments and job interviews. Thank you so much for caring and for being part of the Charlie’s Place family!

  3. Hello,

My name is Antwann Harper, I am a graduate assistant for the Civic Hose, a service learning cohort, that is part of the Honey W. Nashman Center at George Washington University. I wanted to get in contact with you all, concerning a potential service project. Please give me a call or email for more details. Thanks

  4. My twin 16 year old juniors need to do 40 hours of direct community service before the end of March. St Margaret’s was recommended by Robin Deiner of DCCA. Is it possible to discuss by phone or in person?

  5. Barbara
you and I have chatted on the phone, but never met. I’m impressed by the video and want to make sure it gets to the John Edward Fowler Foundation. I used to be the grants consultant, now retired. My daughter, Suzie Loungeway, has replaced me. You probably have been in touch with Suzie as the Fowler Fdn. is a contributor.
    her personal email: sloungeway@aol.com
I tried to forward the video to her, but couldn’t figure out how to do it. Best if it can be done not as part of the weekly email, but just the video so she can get it to Board Members

  6. I bring teens into the city for missions work, and we have worked with your organization in the past. We are the Pittsburgh conference Free Methodist Church Youth. We are coming to DC in July, and I am inquiring into whether we can work together again. Thank you, and God bless.

    1. We’d love to work with you again! Thank you so much — When will you be here? Please send me an email and we can get you set up. Please email me at bwille@stmargaretsdc.org. Best wishes, Barbara

      1. Barbara,
I sent an e-mail to you. Did you receive it? I am coming into the city July 26-31. Let’s get in touch and work out some details on how our group can help. Look forward to speaking with you.

  7. Could someone send me information on how I can volunteer during the week for the breakfast program?

    1. Hi Josh,

Thank you for your interest in volunteering! We are actually having a volunteer orientation tomorrow, Wednesday, at 7:00am at Charlie’s Place — If you can join us that would be great, if not, we’ll get you signed up for another time. Let me know! Best, Barbara bwille@stmargaretsdc.org
